MORE ABOUT ACUPUNCTURE
How Does Acupuncture Work?
Acupuncture affects the neuroendocrine system promoting parasympathetic nervous system activity and down-regulating the sympathetic, ‘fight or flight’ response to stress. Acupuncture reduces inflammation, increases serotonin, and lowers cortisol. Patients report feeling a sense of calm after an acupuncture session. It peels away the layers of stress and optimizes sleep, energy, and mood. Acupuncture is particularly helpful for reducing anxiety and depression. Most patients receive acupuncture once monthly to maintain these benefits.
Does Acupuncture Hurt?
No, acupuncture does not hurt! The needles are very thin and may feel like a tiny prick when inserted. This feeling subsides quickly and is replaced with a sense of deep relaxation. Patients describe the initial sensation of acupuncture as dull and achy, warm, tingling, or vibrating. These sensations often indicate that the treatment is working and energy is beginning to move, washing away stagnation and pain.
